When during the wedding reception, (Mark Mangilit-Gilsie Savedia) as I was going about my work, 5 of my brides went to the stage and called my name to join them and I got a big surprise of my life! They handed me a PLAQUE OF APPRECIATION.
It read:
PLAQUE OF APPRECIATION
CELIA CUNANAN
"FOR GIVING US PERFECT / STRESS FREE WEDDING"
(signed)
Ana Wienecke, December 2, 2004
Atty. Pia Cristina Bersamin-Embuscado, December 16, 2006
Nikki Veronica Bersamin, July 12, 2008
Atty. Gilsie Savedia-Magilit, November 5, 2011
Atty. Bernadette Manulid-Caballero, January 26, 2008

2. The next week, in another wedding reception,(Jens Busch-Bonita Hipolito) when it was the Couple giving the message, the groom suddenly came to where I was, and handed me a big bouquet of roses! The couple and the family were profuse in saying their thank yous. But when even the guests, who were hoteliers from Malaysia, Macau, New York, Abu Dhabi and Manila were the ones giving profuse compliments, whose heart will not burst with joy!

And on Facebook: here's what I got from them!

Thanks to Tita Celia Cunanan who with her team, made this a dream-come-true night.

‎3. In yesterday's email, I received this from another couple, Kap Aguila-Joyce Reyes:

Dearest Tita Celia,

How are you? I know we have thanked you so many times but please allow me to write you this e-mail to make our thank you official. :)

I want you to know how much I appreciate all the support, thoughtfulness, insight, and care that you showed for the two of us and our families. Honestly, I do not know how we could have survived this wedding without you. And I want to thank you for being so open and positive despite the fears, anxieties, and worries I shared with you. Your presence made me feel much stronger and at ease. We just realized that we were not even doing anything wedding-related during the week prior to the wedding! That's how prepared (or brave) we felt!

Seriously, Tita maraming salamat po! Your professionalism and years of experience helped in shaping our wedding. Thank you for insisting that we do the table set up, that we meet with Gelli and Roger, that we have food in the morning for the suppliers, and that we give some more effort for our first dance! Thank you for making us realize that various flower set ups are better than having a uniform arrangement, coordinating with the rest of the suppliers, and for weaving everything together.

Thank you, Tita! I wish we can say let's do it again soon! How we both wish we can get married again! And if ever we do, we would not change a thing because we both agree that it was a perfect day made up of everything we wished for and more! Thank you for all your patience, understanding, and flexibility. We wouldn't have done it without you!

Our best regards,
Joyce and Kap

Today, I am actually not feeling well because of the unpredictable weather changes. But with these happy thoughts, how can I not feel good?

There is still so much to thank God for! Thank you Lord! You know why...

How time flies!

Gosh! i never realized that I have not blogged for more than a year! I guess I am not a born blogger, nor even a writer... I can talk and talk but too lazy to write...

I was able to visit this because I had not much to do due to typhoon "Pedring" whose heavy winds, though not much rain, blasted thru Metro Manila. Of course, it would be too hard to navigate the streets with such typhoon, so better stay home and listen to the news. I said listen-because our cable antennae is out, too. One reason also why I have more time in my hands for this computer - thus this blog entry...

Everything was put to a halt because of "Pedring": starting yesterday, when I should have gone to Antipolo for an ocular inspection of Sun Valley Golf club and Jardin de Miramar for a Dec. 27, 2011 wedding client. This morning I should have gone to Manila Chancery to submit documents of my Nov. 12, 2011 wedding clients. Then I should have consulted at Caritas Clinic for my long-delayed medical check-up. And this evening we had to postpone the BLD District General Assembly where we had to make a presentation.

Well, the good thing is I was able to get a very much needed rest and sleep after a bout with terrible colds... It seems that these colds virus are getting to be too rampant. I meet so many friends with colds and some confined due to flu or bronchitis.

Ahh... I think its the weather here now - it gets too hot and humid, then it will suddenly rain. And when it rains it really pours, literally! Catching one in the middle with nary an umbrella, nor a jacket! And there starts the sneezing and the coughing...

Praise God I am well now... and getting ready for my wedding on Saturday, 10:00am in San Agustin. So that means a call time of 5:00am for me and my staff at the Manila Peninsula, Bride's prep venue.

I will be working with Derek de los Santos of Redfox Photography. He was the one who recommended me to the couple. This will be my 1st time working with videographer Phoeben Tecson, and hair&make-up artist Faye Young. Another new supplier to me is the very young Abigail Tan of Natural Art, the event stylist for Rigodon Ballroom.

My couple, Kap and Joyce are such sweet and cool guys. They gave me their full trust and confidence which I truly appreciate. It is to such trusting clients like them that we really make it a point to give all our best to hopefully come up to their expectations. Pag kasi totally trusted tayo ng clients, mas merong pressure eh...

And not only that... Kap and Joyce already referred me to another wedding client for April 29, 2012... My sincere thanks to this couple. I sincerely wish them all the best as they spend a new chapter in their lives together.

Autumn Harvest Themed Wedding

This Tuesday, Sept. 7, will be the wedding of 2 beautiful people, an engineer and a lawyer. I was blessed to have a very kind and cooperative couple. Jean might be a hands-on bride, but she's very nice and very creative. Their wedding theme is Autumn Harvest, and where else should they hold it but in Fernwood gardens, typical of the old aristocratic tradition of holding celebrations in the ancestral house gardens after the harvest.

They conceptualized and designed a beautiful invitation, together with Adworks designer/printer, depicting bountiful harvest:

The background of the invitation connotes autumn winds; the color connotes the beautiful weather during harvest season, slowly changing from summer to fall, which begins in September, their wedding month; and the pattern symbolizes bountiful grains harvested. So the totality truly represents the wonderful nature in abundance and prosperity which we fervently wish for them and their future family.

The total ambience of the church and reception shall be true to the harvest theme: flowers with fruits, vegetables and grains - these will be present on the church decor, on the tables, and even the bride's bouquet.

TO ALBERT and JEAN: May you have a happy, healthy and prosperous life ahead together as a family! Rein, the guy in charge, was very helpful and amiable (except he did not offer me any chair, so I was standing the whole hour). He really went into details and explained each item to the couple, even the way on how to secure the particular requirement abroad... He showed samples of the documents (as submitted by other couples), photo-copied some, etc...

Some Chanceries require the CENOMAR even if they're already married abroad, and even if they're of foreign citizenship. The reason they say is that the guy or girl might have come home from abroad, one time or the other and got married to someone here. They just really want to make sure that there was really no marriage solemnized here in the Phils, and abroad (proven by the Certificate of freedom to marry from their embassy). But Rein said it was not necessary with them anymore, since they're already married abroad. This was really good for us, because that's one requirement off our load.

But some other Chanceries stil ask for CENOMAR acquired from Phils' NSO. Why dont they (the Catholic Church or the Chanceries) have uniform policies?

Just asking...

Celia @ 60

Gosh! It's been a loooong loooong time na pala since I last wrote something here! And now, its almost 3 weeks after I turned 60... And that was a swell turning point, I should say.

My children decided to give me a party, but earlier on I told them never to surprise me on my birthday. So I was in on the plans and preparation. But the financial aspect are theirs. Thank God for good children. I am really so proud of mine! Thanks Gilbert & Joy, Gian & Aimee, and Cheya, my dearest daughter.

Cheya really did a lot to make this celebration a real "debut" for me.. I did not have a debut party so this was it!

I would like to thank Josiah's Catering, Studio A Photography, Prady and Cherry of Jesi Mendez Salon, Joy San Gabriel Cakes. Also to Jong Mesina for the invitation inspiration... Thank you also to the Black Light Theatre for their superb performance.

You can see pictures posted on my multiply site and my facebook.

I just want to thank and praise the Lord for the many blessings: the good clan He has placed me in, the best family He has given me, and the very wonderful friends He provided me with.

I told my friends not to give me gifts, but to help me raise funds for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy. I have two very good reasons for this. First, is to avoid huge expenses go to waste in case of engagement break-up. Second, and most importantly, is to make the bond between the couple more solid after learning many things about each other.

There are so many seminars being given by parishes, but the best ones would be the stay-in weekend. Such seminars are being offered by Discovery Weekend (DW) or the Catholic Engaged Encounter (CEE). Topics taken up are the sacrament of matrimony, how to deal with your partner, communication and dialogue, family planning, intimacy and spirituality.

I feel bad for the couple and their families whenever a wedding does not push thru. It's hard enough dealing with the emotional stress, but the financial strain makes it even difficult to accept.

This seminar has been taken for granted by people. Majority of the couples take this only because it is a requirement of the catholic church. And they take it after hiring most, if not all, the suppliers or almost very near the wedding date. Thus, we have seen several couples break up almost a month before the wedding. Some reasons could be because one or both found out they are not yet prepared for the married life; or that they are not really that compatible with each other.

However, I have also seen couples, and this is the majority, who are more in love with each other after taking the seminar. I found out that they are closer and more bonded to each other.

By the way, although the seminars are mostly sponsored by the catholic church, I understand that other religious affiliations are also welcome at the DW and the CEE.

So take my advice: after giving the ring and she said "YES", plan to hie off for a weekend together. After all, isn't it nice to be with each other, learn more about each other and know where you are going just after you decide to live together for the rest of your life?

Mardi Gras Debut Celebration

We had a very wonderful time at the Mardi Gras themed debut of Nicole Audri Belo held last March 6 (2009) at the Palacio de Manila. The decor and ambience was truly one of the most festive ones I've handled, very true to the spirit of a Mardi Gras. As soon as the guests arrived, masks, colorful beads of necklaces and bracelets for the ladies and masks for the gentlemen were handed out from fur-covered baskets by little girls wearing crowns on their heads. At the foyeur, guests pose for pictorial in front of a colorful backdrop and the sign "AUDRI at 18" in glittering letters.

Then guests passed the big arch to go inside the ballroom to find giant masks and balloons in various colors and sizes hanging all over with the mood lighting providing the festive ambience. The stage had pillars, masks, the sun, the moon and arches made of papier-machés.

Mardi Gras festivities are always marked by a queen and her royal court. And what a beautiful queen, or I would rather say, Princess, was Nicole Audri that night! She was radiant with her royal court of handsome gentlemen in suits and lovely ladies in formal dresses.

The program was so entertaining: songs from cousins and friends; dances upon dances also perfomed by uncles, cousins, friends and even by her grandpa! The dances were indefatigably choreographed by Pio Llenado. My ever faithful emcee, Ben Redulla provided the smooth flow of the program. Even the poignant traditional candle ceremony was not without tears flowing from the guests as each family and friend greeted and wished our debutante the best hapy birthday wishes. When the party was in full swing, the Wild cocktails bar was opened and a live band performed as everyone partied! Truly a real grand Mardi Gras celebration!

Just watch the pictures I posted here care of Mian Sta. Cruz, Audri's first cousin, and Mian's friend, Prince of Graham Photography. These 2 budding photographers should be watched as they are really very very good!

The Oriental Wedding Dream Team

The Oriental Wedding Dream Showcase was put together by a team of event professionals who have had extensive experience in organizing Asian-inspired events. I personally invited these suppliers because for the times that I have worked with them, I admire their passion for their work, the results of that passion, and their professionalism. Mind you, they are not limited to the oriental theme, but ask them to do anything, and as long as it is doable, they will do it for you!

Here they are: The Oriental Wedding Dream Theme team:

MERLENE J. Aside from being locally available, the real beauty of it is that the articles are appropriate for Philippine setting. Some articles were culled from the US version, but these articles are very much adaptable here. So now, we get the best from East and West... and at the most reasonable price already!

They had a grand launching last Sept. 17 at Manila Pen's Conservatory and I think everyone in the wedding industry was there. Wedding planners, photographers, florists, cake makers, make-up artists, souvenir suppliers were there. The set-up was very much Martha Stewart. I believe most guests were wishing that Martha herself was there, as I did.

As usual, there were the Manila Pen's savory hors' de oeuvres, scones (since it was supposed to be a tea party), and lots and lots of sweets... Any one with high sugar or diabetes should not be there! :-) Gosh! cupcakes, pastillas, all assortment of tarts and tartlettes, meringue and macarons, and so many others too many to mention... Well, it was a very good, or I must say "sweet" ending to my filling lunch earlier at Gloria Maris for Linda Lazo's bday blow-out.

But one thing caught everybody's eyes: the flower pot mini-cakes with assorted pink flowers, and everything edible including the pot. I was told that it was made by Peachy Juban of Shortcrust. She happens to be the daughter of one of my co-members in BLD, and a neighbor of our friend Tony Suiza. I just had to bring one home. I couldnt get myself to eat it there because I was already full (!), and it was so pretty to eat right away..

I recommended it to my bride who's having a garden-themed wedding, and she loved it. So I had to look for the number of Peachy and call her up. After several days, we finally got connected. This morning, she gave me her number and I was able to get the info I needed. I also learned that it was called POTS DU CREME... Hopefully, we clinch the deal...

Spanish Songs and Luis Miguel

My October 25 wedding will have a Spanish Theme, and Larry Natividad will be doing the flowers and reception styling, complete with props. For the music to be provided by MPO, my bride wanted to have some spanish songs, interspersed with english. So I made a little google searching for popular spanish songs. And I fell in love with Luis Miguel and his songs!!! (sorry, darling, you're still my first love!) I do not even understand the words, but the melody and tiempo are very beautiful!

Luismi as he is called is muy guapo! And the songs he sings are really full of love and romance. Grabe! You should listen to his "Como Yo Te Ame", "Sabor A Mi" and "Amenecer"... Even his Historia de Un Amor, a very old love song, is better than the one sang by Julio Iglesias. Although the voice of Julio has a very unique sexy quality (listen to his "All of You" with Diana Ross), Luismi's voice is full and has a wider range.

Now I realize why they say that Latinos are very romantic. Their music is full of love and the melodies are really sexy and sensual... And if you watch the you tube of "Amenecer", wow, the scenes are bordering on X rating...hehehe... When Gilan (my apo) came and saw me watching it, I had to transfer to another site :-).. But the video of "Como Yo Te Ame" has very beautiful scenery of sunrise, sunsets, moons and stars, and so he even asked me to repeat it, hehe...

I think I have to buy Luis Miguel's "Segundo Romance" album because that's where these songs are contained. But his first grammy was the 1st "Romance" album. See, I even had to look up and read about him! Hahaha! That's how in love I got! They posted a video with his pictures as he was growing up ("La Gloria Eres Tu" another beautiful song!), ayyayay talagang muy guapo!

I dare you to listen, and tell me if you wont fall in love with your guy or even with Luis Miguel with these spanish songs!!!

Villa Paraiso GK Village

As a member of the BLD-GK Ministry of Bukas Loob sa Diyos Community (BLD), We attended a Gawad Kalinga (GK) activity at Villa Paraiso in Sun Vally Parañaque City. Gerry and I did the survey work going from house to house.

One thing i confirmed, the attitude of a person changes with a change of environment. And this time, for the better. As one beneficiary said, owning your own house and in such an improved condition brought them dignity. And now he looks forward to adding/doing something for the house. He is now saving to add ceiling to their 2nd floor. Actually they have done so much already to beautify and improve what was given them: repainted, new tiles, a 2nd floor and improved kitchen. They used to pay P1000/month for a 6 sqm room in the old squatter area. Now they just pay P500/month to the city hall for the lot. GK gave them the house (20 sqm) after the houses in that area were burned and gutted by fire.

In my heart, I still want to do somethng for them. I pray that the Lord give me more time and resources to be able to take care of our lesser fortunate brothers and sisters who are just victims of the way our government has been run all these years..

I pray that more people can reach out to them. I told him that I definitely would like to have them sing in one of the masses that we are going to offer for my friend. I would like this as my gift for the bereaved family, because I believe that just listening to the beautiful voices of this group would somehow ease the burden and pain they are feeling.

This group never failed me... They would be there the moment I called them even on such short notice... Actually, I always call them on short notice, hehe.. :-) And this time, Rodel was really forceful in suggesting that they sing that first night, saying that everyone was raring to go. They have a full force, plus their balikbayan choir-mate, Roselle (one of the first persons I met from their group 5 years ago) was home and would be leaving the next day. So it would be like a reunion for us. I felt so happy with his enthusiasm, so I had them sing last night.

And it never fails... Their singing was awesome! Every one was all praises for their singing. The good feeling was that when we see each other, it really was like seeing good old friends. Roselle and I were just so thrilled that we saw each other before they went back to the States.

I think their name is so apt: when they sing, it is really "para sa iyo"... But it definitely is "para kay Lord"...

About Rusty

Yesterday, we lost a friend to the Big "C". I cried the moment I read his son's text message that his dad has gone home to the Father. It was not as if it was a sudden one, for Rusty had been sick for the last 3 months. He complained of a backache, had a check up and after several tests, they were told that it was stage 4. We were all in a state of denial. I was even positive that he will survive, if not at least be given more years. Even after a month and a half in China for cryosurgery, they were told to go home apparently because there were some complications in the lungs, or something...

Rusty, in his own silent ways, was a very prayerful man. He may not look religious, but I believe he was a very spiritual person. He followed Christ in the way he lived. He was ever ready to help people in any way he can: thru counselling and pastoral care, thru financial assistance/donations and even physical help if needed. I personally saw how he and his wife Olive were loved and respected by the BLD Community, especially the Malolos District. We all know that love and respect should be earned, and can never be obliged. Rusty and Olive have earned these well.

For two days now, the room where his wake is had been filled with so many friends from the BLD Community, from his business relations, and other relations. His son said it well, that it is only now that they realized how many people's lives Rusty had touched. This somehow eases their grief.

Rusty was a soft-spoken but very jolly and humorous person. It was from his candid sharing of how he got his wife to say "YES", that our ministry, the BLD-GK Ministry, derived all the fun that we are having all these 4 years that we are together. That's a "never-miss" thing with him, he would be telling true stories about them very candidly, and the obvious result would be the group rolling with laughter. The thing is that the way he told his funny stories was very softly spoken, straight to the point, and factually. I would say that Rusty was a serious funny man, or a funny serious man... whatever... we will surely miss all the fun times we had together...

I pray for his peace and joy in the eternal kingdom of God. With all the good works he has done in his life, I am sure he will.

The Lord taketh, but He giveth more... A few hours after Rusty passed away, his daughter Erica gave birth to a beautiful 7.2 lbs baby boy. I believe that Rusty has seen his first grandson, probably even touched him. And I am sure he is happy that it was an easy delivery for Erica, who is now going to start her own family.

Godspeed, Rusty.

Ienne's Debut

This was one of the best debuts I coordinated, and most challenging too. We had a "CLUB" theme complete with a bouncer, flair tenders who performed to the crowd's delight, full bar set-up (except that only mild alcoholic drinks are served due to the age profile of our guests), a DJ booth set up (with Diego Mapa as DJ the whole evening), and a band (Taken by Cars).

Ienne is such a sweet girl, and still a bit childlike in her ways. She typifies girls her age who is neither a girl nor a woman yet. She was even hesitant at first to have a big celebration and when she finally agreed (due to her mom's persistent persuasion), she wanted a no-nonsense party, just something to celebrate the day with her friends and family. (in her thanksgiving speech,Ienne thanked her mom for "pushing" (what was her word?) her to have this party

She did not want a cotillion dance, 18 roses, 18 treasures, and 18 wines, but I finally persuaded her to have at least the 18 candles to give chance for her family and close friends to give their wishes. This was one of the challenges for me, for how can we have an enjoyable debut party without those "shimagajigs"? That evening, I personally saw that she really enjoyed the night because of the heavy turnout of friends and family who came despite the rains. Her great grandmother (who was a really cool lady despite her age), uncles and aunts came all the way from Guam just to celebrate the day with her. Oh this is another nice thing I saw that evening-4 generations were there celebrating!

When I met with Ienne and her mom, Tin, we brainstormed about the theme of the party. This was the first challenge of the planning. There were so many ideas that came to our minds: winter wonderland, fairy tale, casino, various kinds of gardens theme e.g., enchanted, english, spring, etc.. Until finally they settled for a "CLUB" theme.

There was a bouncer to allow entrance only to guests who have bracelets marked "Je t'aime", and a "karmic foot" stamped on their wrists. The hit of the evening was the Clique booth set up for guests to have pictures taken as a "barkada" in their wackiest shots and these pixes are pasted on an album where guests write their messages for the debutante. The set up of the venue was like a club, throw pillows, low chairs, and lighting effects just like you are in a real club or disco.

But for me the real highlight of the evening was the performance of the Black Light Theatre group of Sto Niño de Tondo. It was such an awesome and moving performance. Several guests told me they were filled with emotions, some said they had goose bumps, some wanted more! It was really something you would want to see performed again... You can watch it at Dan Pamintuan's site: www.shierdan.com or http://www.shierdan.blogspot.com

Looking for this black light group was one of the challenges. When Tin told me she wanted to give this as a surprise to Ienne one week before the event, I set out to look for it, asking several people I know in the events field, and looking for it in the website, but to no avail. Then the Wednesday before the event, the man-friday of Ienne's lola-aunt found this group, so we set a meeting on Thursday, and there they performed on Saturday... a real photo-finish job,but a job really well done!

The greatest challenge was how to make the program stretch to midnight of the next day for the actual birthday of Ienne. We wanted that the singing of Happy Birthday and blowing of the candles will be done on her actual birthday. So we had trivia games and had to think of other fun games at the last minute with lots of Starbucks GCs and 3 iPods as prizes. So by 12:00 midnight we are on the last quarter of the 18candles well-wishers, hehe, nag-overshoot pa.. :-)

Rains and all, the party went on till 3:00 in the morning... Friday lunch was food tasting of 2 set menus at the Manila Diamond Hotel with my bride Dinia Cuevas who's getting married on Nov 5. Then that evening, it was the birthday party of my cousin Moppet Cruz. No amount of dancing after, I think, can neutralize the amount of food I gorged that day. Then Saturday was my mom's birthday dinner. Well, I really did not eat much there, as I was the host and coordinator of the whole event (sino pa ba?). But I ate a lot of tea sandwiches for cocktails, and picked up a lot of pica-picas, nevertheless. Sunday was the birthday lunch for my aunt Inang Lydia. Oh there, I really ate a lot! Food was so good, and there was really so much. And worst, I ate lechon, sans rival, and had to drink regular coke because there's no diet coke...

At home, from Monday till now, I've been eating sans rival and the carrot walnut cake from my mom's party.. Gosh! How else can I reduce? The good thing is that my blood sugar level is normal. Its my cholesterol and uric acid which is high... Hope the meds I'm taking will take care of them.. :-)

Mama's 95th birthday

My mother has just turned 95 last June 28, 2008. She always looks forward to celebrating her birthdays, be it a big celebration or a small one in Jollibee, she just has to celebrate, period. She thinks of her birthday for 364 days. That's why last Sunday, a day after her 95th birthday celebration, she's already talking of where she will hold her 96th birthday.

Last Saturday, she had her dinner party at the Bays 2 & 3 of Santuario de San Antonio social hall at Forbes Park, Makati. She invited about 150 guests (and she told me that was already substantially reduced), but due to the rains, about 130 guests turned out. Her CWL friends from Grace Park Caloocan City were there. Even the man who bought our old house in Grace Park came. Her cousins who are in their 80's and 90's came. And of course her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were there, except for Kuya Tonieng who's in Cebu and Cesar who's in Bukidnon. The biggest surprise to her was Ate Baby who came all the way from New Jersey just to be with her. Bless you, ate Baby...

We honored her guests who are 90 years old and and above by giving them bouquet of roses each:
Mrs. Jacinta Villena Mendoza or Nana Nene - 95 years old, Her cousin who's her best friend and kabarkada (they even became neighbors in Grace Park when they got married).
Mrs. Dolores Santos Barcelona or Mommy Ona - 92 years old, her comadre, being the ninang of our youngest brother, Benjie.
Mrs. Lydia Santos Torres - 90 years old, her sister in-law who was not able to come because she was preparing for her own birthday celebration the next day, June 29.

I would like to acknowledge the Velvet Mood Musicale of Edwin Silangcruz whose beautiful music and wonderful voice of their singer, Ting, really made the audience enjoy the night. The songs sang were really oldies of the 30's - 50's, mostly Tagalog songs. And the guests were clapping their hands after each song.

I also would like to thank Josiahs Catering for the very delicious cocktail buffet. Jet Versoza, the owner also celebrated her own birthday on June 28... Belated Happy Birthday, Jet!

Kudos also to Lawrence of Angel of Hearts for the beautiful centerpieces. I had to do a raffle, otherwise, the guests were ready to pull each flower and cannibalize them. But what i was not able to control was the guests' scrambling for the delicious carrot walnut cupcakes of Katcakes by Katrina Ann Aguilar. These cupcakes were homemade, and the guests really loooove them!!!

Special thanks should go to my cousin Moppet Cruz who read Mama's story which my mother wrote herself (with some editing by Cheya). Her very clear reading, complete with ad-libbing and emoting made it very interesting to listen to. And to Justine Burgos, my niece who sang "Ikaw" so beautifully.

I thank the Lord for Mama's good health. May she remain to be healthy and strong as long as she lives. May she live to be a hundred! But she has to beat her cousin Baya who lived till 104. She also has an aunt who lived to 102.. Imagine that!

The month of June

The first half of the year is finished, and before we know it, its gonna be the Christmas season again! Gosh, how time flies!

For the month of June, my first wedding, started quite early, literally - at 10:00am. Abi and Jade had their wedding at Santuario de San Antonio and reception at the Renaissance (formerly New World) Hotel. It was a beautiful wedding made more so because of the uniqueness of the mass celebration courtesy of Fr. Dave Clay. Jade looked every inch a radiant bride, and the make-up done to her by Jesi Mendez captured her demureness. Their wedding pics are at Fol Rana's blog: http://blog.folrana.com/.

My event ending the month of June was my mom's 95th birthday celebration. Read about it in my blog (see link).

One thing I noticed in all of my weddings, whenever I do the raffle of table numbers for the pictorial, the guests enjoy it so much that you could hear them shouting when their table number is called. Does this have anything to do with the Filipinos' love of gambling? It has been said that Filipinos will bet about anything: cockfighting, horseracing, lotto (oh see the long lines for this), even the hamsters' race and "beto-beto" at the fair or "perya" during town fiestas. This is why I do not agree to silent cueing for pictorials. I like to see the way guests are anticipating during the raffle, and excited when their table number is called. The random way of pictorial assures fairness, so that even if a guest is seated at the last table, he could be called anytime, especially if everyone is raring to go to the buffet table.

American Idol Season 7

Well, there it is! The Battle of the Davids! And the winner is... DAVID COOK! Although he goofed on his very last song, I think between the two (Archuleta and Cook), Cook befits the throne... He looks it... and he can sing and perform well anyway...

But personally? It is Sysesha Mercado for me... She is my American Idol!

It was such an emotional moment for Cook.. I have never seen him cry before, except for a few misty-eye moments. But this time, he was really overwhelmed! I guess after his last song, he really felt, he wont make it. So he was in shock that he did... He was really crying!

American Idol Season 7

I never really watched American Idol before, except the finale where they get to choose the winner... But this year, I chanced upon the auditions for season 7 and its opening, so somehow I got hooked! So week after week I watched... AND NOW, they're down to 4! They say its gonna be a battle of the DAVIDS: David Archuleta, the cute one, and David Cook, the "macho" one... I kinda prefer David Cook, if that's the case. Cook has a more flexible voice range unlike that of Archuleta's, but Archuleta really knows how to rearrange the song to his voice range and that makes him really sound good. Plus I think he has developed a big fan base which might be hard to crack...

Personally, though, I prefer Syesha Mercado to win. She really can whip up any song. She can be a Whitney Houston, a Broadway singer/actress, etc... If we just listen closely to the veterans: Andrew Lloyd Webber, Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton and Neil Diamond, plus the judges: Randy, Paula and even Simon - they have always spoken highly of her. However, she always landed at the bottom, and its really short of a miracle that she's still around after landing 5 times at the bottom 3 or bottom 2... So in this contest, looks like she is the dark horse (no pun intended!) ... Hopefully the fan base of the others will transfer to her...

For the coming round, Jason Castro should go... The top 3 should be the 2 Davids and Syesha.. Well, Abangan!

30 and lovin' it!

Cheya's birthday is really on Feb 27, but since it was a Wednesday, she decided to celebrate her 30th birthday on Saturday, March 1. She had all the works, but invited only a few very selected and close friends. She said she invited the persons who "who saw me through the toughest times"...

The venue was the World Trade Center in Roxas Boulevard. She chose it because of the "grand piano"... Hahaha... That was her only non-negotiable requirement - a grand piano with a singer. For about 6 months we were scouting for a place with a grand piano, but will accommodate a private party of about 30-40 people only. We tried Discovery Suites' Serendipity Lounge, but they dont want to reserve it for a private party, and they are open only till 10:00PM. We also looked at the Presidential Suite of Richmonde Hotel, but its kinda small for a party of 30. I think we looked at 2 or more places, even tried The Peak at Tagaytay Highlands, but somehow they dont fit her requirements.

In fairness, she really did all the preparations with just a little consulting with me. The color motif was pink and brown, so her linens were in pink and brown, and all the chairs were upholstered brown. Her invitation stated after-dinner "Music, Cocktails and Desserts", so she really had lots of wine and cocktail drinks, desserts, and supposed to be pica-pica, but the food turned out heavy and a-plenty... Makati Skyline, the caterer, was very generous in their servings. And Cheya still added "Pritchon" and desserts of choco fountain and cupcakes.

We should not have eaten dinner anymore.. I had 3 glasses of Asti Spumante, my favorite champagne, and I did not even feel groggy... The favorite of most was the drink called "Cheya's Surprise"...

The pianist and the singer provided the soothing bossa nova and mellow music... I saw that the guests enjoyed making the do-it-yourself scrapbook guest book... My son Gian was the photographer, and my eldest son, Gilbert was the videographer. Joy, my daughter in law bought the ice cream cakes and the choco brown and pink cupcakes.. With Sunday Cabagay as stylist, the place was abloom with all-pink roses...

We went home at 2:00 am...

Happy Birthday, Cheya! May the Lord continue to bless you as He has done through all the 30 years. I pray that He will grant you the most important prayer that we ask of Him - to heal you totally and completely. In the Name of Jesus, we pray... AMEN.

In Memoriam: Paulo Clemente

Last wednesday morning (Feb 27), I woke up to about 15 messages on my cellphone. And how shocked I was, that I really had to gasp loudly: "Oh my God!" that my husband beside me was awakened, asking, "why, what happened?" I told him what was written: "Paulo Clemente passed away. Please pray for the eternal rest of his soul." Some were written around midnight, and some in the wee hours of the morning... I was so shocked that I even forgot it was my daughter's birthday... I had to call up Ces first to find out if the messages were true, what happened, and what are the plans... I told her about Paulo even before greeting her "happy birthday", which I did much, much later only after I realized what day it was...

I felt really sad for the passing away of someone who was at the height of his career. My sadness also stems from the fact that although we just met about 4-5 years ago, and were not together always, the very few times we were, we seemed like we really were old friends from way back.

Paulo was one of the very few brilliant hosts who I recommend to my brides and grooms. He speaks well, sings well, and can really get the audience on their feet because of his very good sense of humor... He was one of the few who can host fluently in both english and tagalog. And he was very professional in all his dealings. But most importantly, he was such a good person. He would not only be concerned with himself, but was sensitive to the other person's feelings and situation, too.

Oh, but when he got mad.. grrr... that's what you will hear from him.. and watch out, he would tell you as it really is... Our Punta Fuego incident easily comes to mind... I am sure all the suppliers there that night know what I am talking about...

The waw suppliers yahoo group will surely miss his advices and his rantings... But more than that, we will definitely miss his very good sense of humor... I never failed to laugh whenever he infused his mails with wit and humor... One time, I wrote him that I was really rocking on my chair, laughing so loud, that even my children had to read what he wrote...

I will surely miss our meetings in coffee shops, sipping coffee and exchanging ideas, having some really good laughs... We were supposed to have a meeting with our October client, but we felt, its still too early yet... Yet, now, he's gone...

I am consoled with the belief that he is now singing with the angels in heaven. He is such a good Christian that he even named his company "Angel's Wink"... Could this be some sort of a prophetic intuition that when he passes from this life to the next, he will be one of the angels winking at us? I am so inclined to believe so.

Paulo, rest in the peace of the Lord. Also pray for us who are still battling here on this earth. Sing well with the angels as you praise our Lord Almighty. So long... farewell.. till we meet in the Lord's kingdom...

I shall not let this blog end without telling Ces, Paulo's very able assistant cum manager, that our prayers and love are with him as he battles with this hurt... But be strong Ces, for Paulo wants you to be that way... Life has to go on... you still have many things to accomplish, and I'm sure you will... for Paulo... Just cling to the Lord, and you will be alright...

Happy Valentine's Day!

My, my... This day came and went without any funfare as to what the day really meant.. Well, it feels nice to have a "Valentino". At exactly midnight (last night) Gerry greeted me with a BIG KISS! After being married for 37 years, it still feels good, maski kiss na lang, hahaha!!! Since I have lots of things to do today, and he has several meetings to attend to, we just decided to have a belated valentine dinner on saturday...

Thoughout the day I kept receiving text messages of different kinds of greetings, meron serious, but mostly kalokohans... Here's an example:
"We all love to spend money buying clothes, BUT we never realize that the best moments in life are enjoyed without clothes.. Ha..ha..ha.. Happy Hearts Day!"... Oh, yes, the months of December and January were real busy months for all of us, especially the wedding suppliers... People ask me why couples opt to get married in the months of December and January, and thru the 1st 2 weeks of February. Well, my guess would be because they're the coolest months of the year, nice to have someone you love huddled close to you at night... Or could it be because there's the Christmas bonus to spend for the wedding... another reason could be because the mood and ambience of the season is so cheerful as depicted in the decorations of the various venues... One reason given to me is that most relatives abroad opt to come home during this time, so might as well celebrate the wedding when they are around...

The past months were both hectic and fun! As I've said quite often: I love my job! it really gives me satisfaction knowing that I was able to help a Couple achieve a beautiful wedding. That's the good thing about this craft, at the end of each event, you have finished something.

Oh, there will never really be a perfect day, that's why I never promise my clients a perfect day. I tell them that Murphy's Law will always try to be there at all time, and that only the Lord is perfect.. But somehow, with the ardous task of preparation and creative planning, the output is well worth the work... (sans brides (and mothers or sisters) who will always look for something to complain about..)

One thing I'd like to do is to thank my couples for trusting me to assist them in planning and coordinating their special day... I was able to do my part of sharing the talent that the Lord has blessed me with, because they gave me the opportunity to do so.. And for this, I am truly grateful.

So to all my 2007 couples (and the past years as well; and to all my January & February 2008 couples - THANK YOU VERY MUCH! All of you are blessings to me and the staff of THE SOCIAL CONNECTION... Congratulations and wishing you all the best on your new life together as married couples...

As the year 2008 unfolds, we look forward to seeing more happy brides and grooms! More events, too: wedding anniversaries, debuts and birthday milestones...

This year is a milestone year for my love ones: Mama will be 95 in June, Gerry will be 65 in April, and Cheya will be 30 this February... And that means, I will really be busy planning for them - without pay...hahaha...

An Interesting Week

This week had been an interesting week indeed! I started the evening of Monday, Nov 26 with a seminar called by the Archdiocese of Manila wherein Fr. Genaro Diwa, head of the Liturgical Ministries of the Catholic Church gave a seminar on the roles of the wedding planners/coordinators in a Catholic wedding, as well as in a Catholic marriage. There were several enlightening points that he spoke about, but the rest are actually confirmation of what I had been practicing as a catholic wedding planner all along. He said that one of the seminar's aims was to consult with the participants on how to improve church and planner relationship. It also aims to get inputs on how to standardize the church requirements and practices at least within the Archdiocese of Manila. Well, that's a very good objective, and now at least we know that the Catholic Church does not shun wedding planners but rather looks forward to the assistance that we, as wedding planners/coordinators, can give.

Tuesday evening, Nov 27, was the PAWP Christmas party. The theme was "Razzle Dazzle" and our president JP wanted us to come in our most colorful attire.. And so I did.. and I won the "most colorful attire" of the evening... The evening was fun, despite the continuous rains due to "Lando" and "Mina" storms converging in one night... Talk about a couple.. As one DJ said, "lets hope we dont get a third party, or we will really have a havoc in our hands"... I was thinking of the poor people in Bicol and the southern Philippines, and the northern luzon areas which were being battered by the two storms causing them to be evacuated out of their homes... But I cant miss the PAWP party as we had invited several suppliers who have been supportive of PAWP thru these years. Suppliers attendance was real good, considering they had to travel thru the traffic caused by the rains. Ben Redulla, PAWP's favorite emcee, hosted the games and he proved to be really fun! We have to thank JP and his committee members Nenita, Jody, Liza and Peaches for a job well done. The decors were great, and food was delicious! Congratulations, guys!

This week was capped by suspense and disappointment! At 10:30 in the morning of Nov 29, once again Trillanes and his group tried to do a coup, a poor call for people power but in the end had to surrender to the government due to lack of people support. At first the suspense was there because I really did not know what they have in mind, and what will come out of this adventure. But in the end, I will call it a misadventure! Talk about poor strategy... Now the whole of Luzon has been placed under curfew from 12 midnight till 5 a.m. The government says it will only be for a day or two... but who knows??? Will this be a prelude to martial law again? Oh dear Lord, I pray not..

Balikbayan guests at Punta Fuego

I just came home from an overnight stay at Punta Fuego with Nena Abellera and Cora Musni, and Cora's sister Lulu Zafra. They came home to Manila for a week and they wanted me to bring them to Tagaytay. I thought that they have seen Tagaytay before, what else could be seen there? So I thought of bringing them to Punta Fuego. And since I am also coordinating a wedding there on Jan 3, 2008 (Giraud-Tamondong), I thought I can also do an ocular. I asked Lyn, Gaudiel and Weng to come. However only Weng can make it,and since she requested if her husband Eric can come, too, then I told her to bring him... That was a good move for me, because Eric had been very helpful in assisting us with our luggage and other needs, esp with Lulu who is afflicted with a kidney disease that makes her quite weak..

I just met Cora, and I learned that she came home purposefully for her sister, knowing that she has a debilitating disease, she wanted to spend time with her... I find that a very nice and thoughtful gesture... Cora is a very vivacious person, somewhat straightforward, but I know that she meant well... she is also very generous and caring, esp for those who serve her: waiters, bellboys, drivers and even to my staff. She has a kind heart, always solicitous of others... Maybe that is why she is so blessed... To travel and to spend seemed nothing to her.

Nena is now known as Maggie, from Magdalena, her filipino name. She has been a good friend of mine in my teen years. We lost contact and didnt know each other's whereabouts until one time when she saw Papa's picture while looking at Yoly Liwanag's album. What a small world! Yolly is their neighbor and good friend in Cerritos,California and she is an hijada of Papa for her wedding. The Liwanags were very close family friends, because Papa was their lawyer-retainer for all their properties and businesses since the 50's till Papa retired...

Going back to Nena... when she saw Papa's picture, she started asking the hows, whys, and wheres that led us to be connected again after all those years... That was in 1992 when Gerry was the GM of MIAA.. Since then, whenever I go to LA, and Nena comes here, we make it a point to see each other.. We have been reconnected again...

Nena and Cora arrived in Manila midnight of Nov 10.. I fetched them sunday morning, Nov 11, brought them to mass in Magallanes, and proceeded to Punta Fuego for an overnight stay. while there, we talked, walked, ate a lot. Meanwhile, I utilized some time to go to the venues for the Jan 3 wedding ceremony and reception. I was able to talk to Froilan, the head waiter. Overall, I was able to do my job at the same time entertain my balikbayan guests.

The next morning, Nov 12, we proceeded to Tagaytay Highlands to have lunch there and show them around, too. By 3:00PM, we proceeded home, and I checked them in at Discovery Suites where I gave them a free-night stay with breakfast voucher and passes to the swimming pool and gym. The free night is on the 3rd night. Its one of my vouchers from my Lifestyle Card membership... Nena has always been showing me around LA and vicinity too, whenver I was there... I'm just glad I was able to reciprocate somehow...

My Birthday

Oct 21 came and I planned for a very intimate time with my family. It was a sunday, so we went to Mass at 12:00 noon in Magallanes. Aimee was still in Baguio for a convention, so only Cheya, Gerry and I went to Mass. Gian and Gilan waited for Aimee so they could hear mass together. Gilbert and Joy came home from Montalban. After the mass, we had a sumptous lunch at home with only Benjie and Dorsay as our guests.
Benjie and Dorsay came over to bring mama to a hilot because she had a slight accident the night before. She fell from her chair, and had blood oozing out of her head that made us so scared we rushed her to Makati Med. Her CT Scan and Xrays showed nothing irregular. Her wound was bandaged, no stitches, since it was only superficial, so we brought her home... Thank God she is OK...

The day was just a relaxing day with the family...Although I spent practically the whole day answering text messages and phone calls of greetings.. :-) What a nice feeling.. :-)
Dinner was also at home. Rochelle cooked really special dishes that day... kare-kare, laing, Bicol express, roast chicken, sotanghon guisado, steamed prawns... She did them all.. Praise God for Rochelle!!

Cheya was already planning for a party on my 60th birthday... Hmmm, lets see..

I thank the Lord for my 58th year. I am so blessed with a loving and happy family. I am so touched by what Cheya said in one of our earlier dinners, that she does not mind us not having too much financially, nor does she mind about her sickness.. She just wants our family to remain as close, as bonded and as loving as we are now... Praise the Lord.

Well, October went so fast! TSC's anniversary, my birthday and 3 weddings... Truly, to the Lord be the Glory!!

My old blog

I actually started a blog last July 14,2006. Everybody arrived quite late, as I came from several meetings, and the staff came from their respective jobs. Only Ate Jo was not able to come due to her trauma from the bombing that happened at Glorietta Makati earlier that afternoon.
Ate Jo already brought her overnight bag and deposited it in Landmark. Then while she was having lunch with her neighbors at North Park, the bombing happened which left her shaken. They all decided to go home straight-away, leaving her things behind at Landmark.

At Discovery Suites, I was pleasantly surprised that we were upgraded to a 3-BR suite. It had a kitchen with complete equipment, a big dining and living room. We were complete by 9PM, so we had dinner delivered from Racks, and had a delicious caramel cake given by Joy San Gabriel for dessert. After dinner, we started our planning and review for our December weddings... With all the chiding, ribbing, picture-taking and side-kwentos,we finished at 4:30A.M. We did not even touch the January weddings, and we were all poofed!! So we went to bed...

Everybody was up at 9AM the next morning, so I told them to have their buffet breakfast ahead. Since I normally really dont take breakfast, I decided to stay and have brewed coffee in the room instead. Ate Jo arrived with Joan, and we all had a grand time telling her stories about last night's session. She had to catch up and review, though. We could hardly separate from each other even when it was already 1:00PM, and had to check out. But separate we must...

Cheya, who stayed with us for the night, and I had lunch at the Serendipity Lounge where we discussed with the Captain waiter her proposed party for her 30th birthday in February, 2008.

Last Quarter of 2007

Oh my gosh! My last post was last December 2006, my wedding anniversary... I never realized that I have not written anything for more than 8 months... Was I busy? No, not really, I guess... I think it was plain lazy on my part?! Well, well, well, that means I have to summarize here the major events of the past months so that this journal will at least be faithful to its mission...

Let me start of course in January, 2007...
Jan. 15 - My son Gilbert maried Renee Balmes, nicknamed Joy, in a very beautiful ceremony at the Santuario de San Antonio, Forbes Park, Makati City at 3:00 PM. Reception was held at the Manila Polo Club, also in Forbes Park.

I am so grateful for all those who attended, especially the principal sponsors and entourage, some of whom came all the way from the United States just to attend this special occasion. I will forever be thankful to my fellow wedding suppliers who really gave me their best and at big big discounts! mang Emil Buencamino, Jun Hen, Larry Natividad, Edgar Allan, Trining Velayo (my kabarkada and dorm-mate from our freshman years in UP) and Dylan Thomas, Gilbert's UP classmate, and who has been emceeing for me since I started The Social Connection. Oh I should not forget Prady of Jesi Mendez' Salon who made us girls all pretty and blooming...You guys made this wedding real spectacular!
Champagne, red and white wine, assorted gourmet cheeses and fruits were flowing during cocktails, special thanks to Joy's auntie ninang who flew them here from the US, and to my husband who left very early in the morningof wedding day to buy the fruits. Makati Skyline, the sole caterer of Manila Polo Club, made everything easy for us, and they really gave everything we agreed upon, and more: good food, good service, courteous personnel and waiters...

Now all Gilbert and Joy have to do is to give us grandchildren.... We pray to the Lord that this will be soon, as Gilan, our 1st grandson who's now 4 yeas old, badly need a playmate at home...

I am so thankful that the preparations for Gilbert's wedding did not in anyway hinder any of my preparations for my forthcoming wedding in Boracay, a grand debut and several Manila weddings in between during the months of February to April.

Not to mention that I was made in charge of the PAWP registration for our wedding plannng seminar. Good thing I was able to deliver the biggest enrollment since PAWP started this series of seminars - 20 participants...

I noticed that unlike the 1st quarter of the year, , the 2nd quarter was a little slow in events. I had a few, but far in between... Of course the 3rd quarter was really slow, being a rainy season. Us wedding planners were comparing, and we noticed that we only had few events for these months.

Now the last quarter is here, and at this point I am really up to my neck in the planning and preparations of my October-December weddings. I am so thankful to the Lord for all these blessings, this talent that HE has given me that I am just so glad to share...

We just finished another PAWP wedding planning seminar this September, and I took charge again of the registration... And again, I posted the highest number of enrollees beating last March with 23 participants. Looks like they will not change me anymore in the registration! Well, I am just glad to be of help...

For 2008, I already have 12 weddings booked and confirmed... Thank you so much dear Lord! I just ask for your guidance, strength and good health, not only for me, but for my staff as well...
